Synonyms What are they? What are they?

Synonyms are words with the same meaning. We use synonyms to make a sentence more interesting.

Repeating one word can get boring. This is why synonyms are used. For example: The cat is large. The cat is big. Big and large are synonyms. The words mean the same thing. When writing a sentence we can replace a word with its synonym.

Look at this sentence. We played with the kids. The word kids, has more than one synonym. Can you think of one?

If you said children then you are correct! You might also say family if the kids were from the same family. We played with the kids. We played with the children. We played with the family.

Now, let’s practice together. Read the story on the next page. Rewrite the story by replacing each underlined word with a word in the box that means about the same thing.

Tim’s Party Tim is having a birthday party tonight. He wants to bring people to his house. After the presents, they will eat the cake and go home. home celebration invite leave consume following

Tim is having a birthday celebration tonight. He wants to invite people to his home. Following the presents, they will consume the cake and leave. Correct Answers Nice work! Good job!

Amber has a migraine and her head hurts so bad. Sometimes we do not know the meaning of a word so we must use context clues to help us figure out what the word might mean to find a synonym. We can figure out from this sentence that a migraine makes Amber’s head hurt. We can look at our possible answers to find out which word would make the most sense to make Amber’s head hurt. medicine headache travel

Now, it is time to try this on your own. Your teacher will pass out a practice sheet. Good luck! Headache is the correct answer, because a headache makes your head hurt. That makes migraine and headache synonyms!
