Making Activated Herbal Oil using CBD dominant plants with Alcohol Extraction (using 1 or 2 lbs of plant material) Use plant material (buds and trim) in its frozen state. Preheat the oven to 290F degrees. Chop the material up well in a Cuisinart or blender. Be sure that the buds are chopped up, around 2mm size. Put the chopped up material in a shallow (1”) layer in a glass baking dish or a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake at 290F degrees for 45 minutes to decarboxylate/activate it. Put the baked, chopped material into quart mason jars, filling to ¾ full and add enough alcohol to cover plant material one inch above the top of the plant material. Use the alcohol to rinse off all surfaces (cuisinart and oven pan) that touched the material up to this point so that you can get every last bit of CBD into the jars. Its sticky stuff and the alcohol will wash it right into the mason jars. Put the lid on the mason jars with an unbleached wax paper sheet between the alcohol and the lid or use a Tattler’s plastic cover instead of the standard to avoid the BPA; and soak for 45 minutes, shaking the bottles up every 5 minutes or so. Place bottles in a sonicator x30 minutes to vibrate off more of the medicinal properties from the plant material. Empty the contents into a press to strain out the material so you are left with green alcohol only. Use a strain mesh bag with the press. The finer the strain, the less waxy material will be in the final oil.

Filter the green alcohol, minus the brown waxy stuff at the bottom of the jar, into a coffee filter to get rid of the rest of the brown waxy stuff. Then with the filtered green alcohol, pour into distiller and let it run until 80% of alcohol is recaptured. Make sure the receptacle for the alcohol fits exactly into the charcoal filter spout. When 80% is recaptured, place a fan on high in front of the distiller and unplug the distiller. Open the lid immediately and let the fan blow off the evaporating alcohol fumes through an open window and allow the alcohol to cool down for 10 minutes before starting it up again. When the unit stops by itself. Then immediately put the fan blowing on the distiller and take off the lid. If using pure cannabis oil: Draw up 1ml into syringe for testing. use 10ml syringes to draw up the cannabis oil into syringes directly from the distiller. From a pound of plant material, the yield should be around 75-90gms. If using diluted 1:1 olive or coconut oil to cannabis oil for kids, add around ml of olive oil (for each pound processed) directly into the distiller after the lid comes off and stir really well with a whisk or spatula. After thoroughly mixing the two oils, pour into a beaker to measure end product. Draw up 2ml for testing Pour the rest of the oils into 2oz or 4oz amber bottles with caps (not droppers) using a funnel if necessary and stirring beaker with each pour. Make sure you are shaking the contents of the dispensing bottle before each use. Store in refrigerator or in a cool, dark place.

Filter the green alcohol, minus the brown waxy stuff at the bottom of the jar, into a coffee filter to get rid of the rest of the brown waxy stuff. Pour the filtered green alcohol into a large stainless steel frying pan and place on induction hot plate (like NuWave). If there is too much green alcohol, start with a full pan and as the liquid evaporates, add more green alcohol until all the alcohol is in the pan. Set hot plate at 100F. Have fan blowing directly on green alcohol and set on high. Both techniques will evaporate off alcohol quickly. Blow fumes out through a window or do it outside on a deck. Fumes are extremely flammable. This process usually takes 3 hours to evaporate off all the alcohol but must be carefully watched during that time. You will know when it is done when you can’t smell anymore alcohol or if the green liquid becomes syrupy. If using pure cannabis oil: Draw up 1ml into syringe for testing. Use 10ml syringes to draw up the cannabis oil into syringes directly from the distiller. From a pound of mature plant material, the yield should be around 75-90gms. Inactivated Cannabis Oil

Low-Tech HO Recipe Step 1 - Activate plant material. Place whole dried flowers in a large baking pan and bake in oven at 290° for 45 minutes. 1# dried flowers will fit in a turkey pan. [Alternatively, this step can be done at the end by baking the finished oil at 290° for 45 minutes.] Step 2 - Extract with Alcohol. Firmly pack activated material into 1-2 glass gallon size jar(s) and cover with alcohol. Place a piece of unbleached wax paper between the jar and the lid. Let material sit in alcohol for 2 weeks. Occasionally agitate (shake) jars and press plant material back down into alcohol if it rises up. [Altering the length of extraction and the amount of alcohol used in this step may have an effect on the yield. The amounts recommended above seem to give great results (CBD about 55,000mg/pound dried ACDC flowers,) but my highest yield (CBD 63,733 mg/pound dried ACDC flowers) came from soaking 1# dried flowers in 1.5 gallons of alcohol for 4 weeks. Also, I have tried extracting for less than 2 weeks, and the results are included.

Step 3 – Drain Alcohol. Place a colander inside a large pot so alcohol that drains through colander is collected in pot. Pour alcohol through colander and leave jar with plant material in it turned upside down in colander to drain for a few hours. Step 4 – Filter Alcohol. Pour green alcohol through a coffee filter. Step 5 – Evaporate Alcohol. Use a distiller to regain alcohol. During the evaporation process, to avoid burning the oil, turn off distiller after about 80% of the alcohol has been recovered, open up the top with a fan blowing into it next to a window to prevent inhalation of the alcohol vapors. Let it cool for 5-10 minutes before starting it back up again. At the end when the distiller turns off by itself (meaning most of the alcohol is evaporated), turn the fan on in order to avoid inhaling vapors and to help with the last evaporation process. After all alcohol is evaporated, the herbal oil that is left may be diluted with liquid coconut oil. The amount of coconut oil added depends on what concentration is needed. Note: Using the Collective's distiller would still require the borrower to learn how to use it from a medicine maker so it is used properly. There will be some amber color material at the bottom (left over plant material) that should not be scraped up. If left in room air, it will solidify. The true oil is green/black in color and will stay in its liquid form.
