Flame Test Virtual Lab Make-up Lab

To begin… Read the entire lab sheet before continuing with this virtual lab so that you will be familiar with the procedures used in the lab. The following slides take you step-by-step through the procedure.

Step one: Rather than rotating from station to station, each station will be shown in the following slides.

Step 2: Students lit the Bunsen burner.

Steps 3-5: The following pictures are the flames produced when various ionic compounds are placed in the flames. The identity of the substance is given at the top of the slide. Only the metal cation is responsible for the color imparted to the flame.

Steps 3-5: Be sure to be as descriptive as you can when listing the color of the flame on your data table!

Li1+

Na1+

K1+

Ca2+

Sr2+

Fe3+

Cu2+

Unknown Flame This flame is the same substance as one of the known substances. Your job is to identify the unknown substance by comparing it to your collected data.

Bright-Line Spectrum of Hydrogen

That’s it! Now you have all the data you need to complete the conclusion questions of your lab. You will have 1 week to finish your lab write-up which should include your data table and the answers to the conclusion questions in complete sentences. Good luck!
