So How Do We Do It? oRead the passage carefully oDecide the main ideas of the passage oHighlight important words or phrases oPut the main points in your own words PARAPHRASE ME!

Example 1 Passage from Book Ancient Egyptians believed that Osiris, a good and wise king, was the first pharaoh. He spread knowledge to other parts of the world, while his wife, Isis, ruled Egypt in his place.

Good Example 1 PARAPHRASED PASSAGE ·King Osiris was the first pharaoh and spread knowledge. Queen Isis ruled Egypt when he was gone. HIGHLIGHTED PASSAGE Ancient Egyptians believed that Osiris, a good and wise king, was the first pharaoh. He spread knowledge to other parts of the world, while his wife, Isis, ruled Egypt in his place

Poor Example 1 Poor Paraphrasing ·King Osiris was an ancient Egyptian King and the first pharaoh. He was good and wise because he spread knowledge to other parts of the world. Change from the original as much as possible! ·Simplify the vocabulary ·Turn a complex sentence into a few simple sentences (vice-versa) ·Don’t just change the words, completely change the structure.

Example 2 Passage from Book oUpon returning home, Osiris was murdered by his evil brother Set, who cut Osiris’s body into pieces and dumped it in the Nile River. Isis found the body and put it back together by winding linen bandages around it. Osiris and Set

Try Another One Passage from Evan Serpick critiquing Eminem ·“At this year’s Grammys, Eminem thanked a long list of rap pioneers, but he left off one name who probably played a bigger role in his success than any of them: the D.O.C.” (Serpick).

Possible Paraphrase ·Although Eminem thanked many rap artists for his success at the Grammys, he did neglect to mention the D.O.C.

One More… ·Passage from David Browne critiquing England ·“Damn those Brits, for decades, they’ve been seizing our music, inserting ingredients of their own, and sending it back to us in new and sometimes improved versions of what they borrowed” (Browne).

Possible Paraphrase ·For many years now, the British have been stealing and altering our music and returning it to us.

Citing Sources Remember to put your Research into YOUR own words, but still give credit to the authors you cite!

How to cite within your paper ·Once you have stated an idea that was NOT originally YOURS, you must give credit to the original author. ·Includes Quotes, Paraphrases, or Summaries. ·You do this by simply adding the author’s name and the page number of the information to the end of that sentence in parentheses (Smith 145).

Citing after a Quote ·You absolutely MUST have a citation immediately following a Quote. ·The British have been “seizing our music, inserting ingredients of their own, and sending it back to us” for years (Browne 32).

Citing after a Paraphrase or Summary ·Putting information into YOUR words does not make it YOUR idea. You still must credit to the originator. ·For many years now, the British have been stealing and altering our music and returning it to us (Browne 32).
