Greater Cederberg Biodiversity Corridor A programme of the Cape Action Plan for the Environment (CAPE)

CAPE 2000 Strategy Identified key threats and causes of biodiversity loss for Cape floristic kingdom Identified areas at threat Developed broad programme activities (biodiversity corridors) – 20 year period Identified need for coordination among various players CAPE Coordination unit (CCU) establishment based on MoU between national and provincial ministers and implementing agencies CAPE Coordination Unit housed at South African National Biodiversity Institute which is vested with implementation of UNCBD by minister of environment

CAPE Mainstreaming biodiversity Vertical and horizontal coordination Identify higher order objectives for programmes Ensure that implementation teams stick to CAPE strategy Coordinate meetings of C.A.P.E. Implementation Committee (CIC), representing stakeholders from national and provincial government, municipalities, research and conservation NGOs, the private sector, parastatals and CBOs

Greater Cederberg Biodiversity Corridor Conserve ecosystem processes and services e.g. pollination, hydrological functions (rivers, wetlands, estuaries) Protect habitat and cultural heritage Adaptation to climate change

Northern Sandveld Rapid expansion of cultivation (potatoes and rooibos): habitat fragmentation Overextraction of water Rare vegetation types Verlorenvlei fresh water lake and wetland Little formal conservation

Approach Spatial Planning using biophysical data of varying accuracy Recognise exclusion of socio-economic data and that this data might change priorities

Aims for Sandveld Reducing further habitat loss and ecosystem functioning Identifying approaches to increase protection for the vegetation types that require it.

Measure for Sandveld Stewardship programme Best Agricultural practice Depts Agriculture and Water legislation Post hoc ministerial decree as priority biodiversity area
