West Oakland STEM Corridor Theory of Action If we build strong foundations in elementary Science, and give students hands-on, engaging learning experiences, and teach students skills in logic and critical thinking, and create transition pathways to middle, high school, and college, and expand on the strong science foundations in elementary, and build strong middle school math and science skills, and infuse technology into all aspects of student learning, and provide students with pre-internships at local community-based, faith-based, and local businesses linked to STEM, and provide students with a robust offering of Global Engineering, Math, Science, and Technological education at the high school level, and if we develop strategic partnerships with our industry partners, colleges, foundations, and local organizations, and if we educate and prepare the community to sustain STEM in West Oakland, then will we see more students of color from lower social economic groups attend college and be prepared for STEM careers, and utilize their STEM skills to revitalize their own communities.

Why West Oakland? The OUSD (Oakland Unified School District) has approved a Strategic Vision that is centered on quality schools in all areas of Oakland. Currently, Oakland is geographically. To the north (European-American/affluent) families, to the East (African-American and Latino/low-middle income families), in the central area of Oakland, a large population of English Language Learner families, and to the West a large number of low-economic, African-Americans, Arabic, and Latino families reside. As a school District, we have decided to invest in one of our most under- served areas: WEST OAKLAND!

National STEM Statistics By 2014, there are expected to be 2 million jobs created in STEM-related fields (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) Concern about America’s ability to be competitive in the global economy has led to a number of calls to action to strengthen the pipeline into these fields (National Academy of Sciences, Committee on Science, Engineering & Public Policy, 2007; U.S. Government Accountability Office, 2006; U.S. Department of Education, 2006). In 2001, there were slightly more than 4 million 9th graders. Four years later, 2.8 million graduated and 1.9 million went on to two and four year college; only 1.3 million were actually ready for college work. Fewer than 300,000 are majoring in STEM fields and only about 167,000 are expected to be STEM college graduates by (National Center for Education Statistics; Digest of Education Statistics)
