Meeting on August 17, 8-9 am MC 101

 Classes were made for each program and the rooms and instructors were separated for Laptop, Student Success and Program Orientation. ◦ 090 – First Year Students ◦ 092 – Second year Students  Admissions added the students like a regular class  Student Services sent out schedules and post cards to students in August reminding them of JumpStart

 There will not be breakfast provided this year as students didn’t eat last year.  Meat Wagon will be providing pork loin on Monday and Tuesday for all students and all faculty and staff.  Faculty have been allocated funds for Wednesday – Friday Lunches  Cold Water (Thanks to HVAC) will be brought to the commons area (Thanks to Custodial) of your building the day you have JumpStart. ◦ Please take the cases you need and it is up to you to keep them cold.

 There will be signs in all the building and on the boulevards. ◦ HP, Riverside Technologies, Meat Wagon, Prairieland Pork Producers, Wells Fargo  For Laptop Days, Follow the signs! ◦ TC – Enter SouthEast door and up the stairs  Lower Level TC rooms (Psych rooms 105/108) will be allocated for those Jumpstart groups that “Start” in TC on the day with Laptops  Add any signs you want for your program

 Schedules are available today ◦ Review the schedules to make sure they are in the correct classes. ◦ Have them sorted and ready to hand out to students.  We want them to have new schedules because of room changes.  Students will show up where there schedule shows

 Printer will be in Student Success Area  Mobile Camera and Printer will be in TC ◦ ID’s should be in the Tech Center ◦ They will need a photo ID for Laptop Sessions  No cameras in HC or WC  Tracy will coordinate the person taking pictures and getting supplies

 There will 75 minute rotations of the following: ◦ 1 Laptop Session ◦ 1 Student Success Session ◦ 3 Program Orientation Sessions  These are blocked and students will see one large session ◦ Each session will have a room and an instructor  The Instructor and Room may change dynamically

 JumpStart Courses (090 and/or 092) ◦ Located in My Current Courses for each group of 25 students  Note: Course goes away from “My Current Courses” after 2 weeks from your JumpStart Course Day ◦ Each Course is Shared by the presenters from Laptop, Student Success and the Program Area ◦ Example: BUS 090-7C on next slide

 Course Information The LMC Class Course Information lists the room location of each of the 3. The longest session is the Program Orientation. The short TC one is laptop and the last short MC portion is Student Success.

◦ Program Area Instructor is Responsible for inserting links to the other 2 groups’ presentations (2 links total) ◦ Will be ed to you Friday morning:  _Assistance/Laptop_Days.jnz _Assistance/Laptop_Days.jnz  _Assistance/Student_Success_Center.jnz _Assistance/Student_Success_Center.jnz

 Send Your Group of Students an on Friday the 17 th of August … Use Collaboration – Coursemates. ◦ Remind them of the times they will be with you, what they’ll do, where to meet, what to bring, that lunch is provided, etc.  Fix Your Calendar to Show in Event List View for yet another location on time/day:

◦ Program Area is Responsible for Taking Attendance  Saving will save all 3 timeframes ◦ Student Success will compile Attendance from the background and Faculty and Student Success can try to contact Non-Attenders

◦ If students don’t show or add to your program late, we’d like faculty to work with Student Success to have them go to the Thursday Evening or Friday makeup session ◦ Thursday Evening and Friday Sessions for Makeup Times  In TC 204/205 (just Laptop & Student Success)  JUMP 090-1C Fri 8:30-11:15  JUMP 090-2C Fri 1-3:40  JUMP 090-4C-E Thursday 6-8:45 pm  JUMP 090-5C-E Thursday 6-8:45 pm

 Know where your students are going to be and meet them there – Have Signs!  Use the course as a tool to post things that students who may not have attended, can look at later and get the same content  Escort Students to All Sessions  Remind them that the presentations are posted on their JumpStart course  Dress well with shirts that have collars

 Post Department Procedures, Handbooks or Policies  Hide Pages and/or Portlets You Aren’t Using  Develop a brief online test that they can take in your presence to see what it’s like ◦ Could be a review of your presentation or basics for STI life, your program, etc  Make a Forum Post Topic for them to Post To: ◦ What is the most exciting/scary thing about starting at STI?

 Goal Setting ◦ What do you want to accomplish? ◦ Who else has done this? ◦ What skills and resources will I need? ◦ What will I have to change in order to achieve my goal? ◦ What is my plan and how hard will I have to work? ◦ What small steps can I take right now? ◦ How have I been doing, what have I learned about myself?  Use these goals later for advising

 Thanks for all the work that goes into the Laptop Sessions, the Student Success Presentations and the Program Orientations.  This is one of the biggest retention events that we can do – let’s make it a great one!

 What unique things are you doing for Program Orientation?
