IB Components TOK – Theory of Knowledge reflect critically on diverse ways of knowing and on areas of knowledge consider the role and nature of knowledge in their own culture, in the cultures of others and in the wider world. CAS – Creativity, Action, Service The CAS requirement is a fundamental part of the programme and takes seriously the importance of life outside the world of scholarship, providing a refreshing counterbalance to academic studies.

IB Components - EE – Extended Essay The extended essay is an independent, self- directed piece of research, culminating in a 4,000-word paper. As a required component, it provides: practical preparation for the kinds of undergraduate research required at University an opportunity for students to engage in an in-depth study of a topic of interest within a chosen subject.

IB Components - EE – Extended Essay Emphasis is placed on the research process: formulating an appropriate research question engaging in a personal exploration of the topic communicating ideas developing an argument.

IB Components - EE – Extended Essay Participation in this process develops the capacity to: analyse synthesize, and evaluate knowledge. Students are supported throughout the process with advice and guidance from a supervisor.

Diploma Programme curriculum HL – Higher level classes Higher level study requires a minimum of 240 class hours Student takes 3 classes over 11 th and 12 th grade SL – Standard level classes standard level study requires a minimum of 150 class hours Student takes 3 classes over 11 th and 12 th grade – May test one SL class in the 11 th Grade

Diploma Programme curriculum In each examination, the student is graded on a scale of 1 (minimum) to 7 (maximum). The award of the diploma requires students to meet defined standards and conditions. These include: – a minimum total of 24 points – and the satisfactory completion of three compulsory core components: 1) theory of knowledge (TOK); 2) extended essay; and 3) creativity, action, service (CAS).

Diploma Programme curriculum Group 1: studies in language and literature students will study literature, including selections of literature in translation, and may choose to combine this with language or performance studies, depending on their choice of course. Diploma Programme curriculum Group 2: language acquisition The main emphasis of the modern language courses is on the acquisition and use of language in a range of contexts and for different purposes while, at the same time, promoting an understanding of another culture through the study of its language. Diploma Programme curriculum Group 3: Individuals and societies Each subject is designed to foster in students the capacity to identify, to analyse critically and to evaluate theories, concepts and arguments relating to the nature and activities of individuals and societies. Diploma Programme curriculum Group 4: Experimental sciences Students explore the concepts, theories, models and techniques that underpin each subject area and through these develop their understanding of the scientific method. Offered at EDHS Biology HL Physics SL Chemistry SL

Diploma Programme curriculum Group 5: Mathematics The aims of these courses are to enable students to: develop mathematical knowledge, concepts and principles develop logical, critical and creative thinking employ and refine their powers of abstraction and generalization. Students are also encouraged to appreciate the international dimensions of mathematics and the multiplicity of its cultural and historical perspectives. IB Assessment IA – Internal Assessment oral work in languages fieldwork in geography laboratory work in the sciences investigations in mathematics artistic performances. External Assessment essays structured problems short-response questions data-response questions text-response questions case-study questions multiple-choice questions (limited use of these). On average an IB DP candidate/student will spend about 20 hours testing over a 2 week period in May.
