Population Health Congress 2008 A Global World – Practical Action for Health and Well-being Professor Aileen Plant Professor Aileen Plant was a great friend to Public Health, locally, nationally and internationally. Aileen was known to, and loved and respected by, so many of the public health family. As a medical epidemiologist and professor of international health at Curtin University of Technology and the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Biosecurity CRC for Emerging Infectious Diseases, she was one of the World Health Organisation's leading experts in outbreak investigation. She had a passion for teaching, mentoring, and the application/translation of research to make a difference. It is therefore fitting that the four peak Australian public health organisations have come together to strike a medal, “The Aileen Plant Medal”. This medal will be presented every 4 years at the Population Health Congress

Population Health Congress 2008 A Global World – Practical Action for Health and Well-being CRITERIA This medal recognises an early career researcher who has:  Made a significant contribution to the field of public health research;  Is an emerging leader in his or her field;  Has undertaken innovative and/or ground breaking research, policy research or practice in the field of population health;  Exhibits research, leadership and/or advocacy skills which assist them in raising the profile of their population health issue of interest.

Population Health Congress 2008 A Global World – Practical Action for Health and Well-being Assoc. Prof. Alan Cass Alan trained as a specialist physician in public health and health policy. As a renal physician, he has undertaken collaborative research in Aboriginal health, bringing together national and international leading Indigenous researchers using quantitative and qualitative methods to improve health outcomes for Indigenous Australians.

Population Health Congress 2008 A Global World – Practical Action for Health and Well-being Dr Tanya Chikritzhs Dr Tanya Chikritzhs, of the National Drug Research Institute, Curtin University of Technology, has significantly influenced and informed policy both in Australia and overseas, and she has played an integral role in major national and international research in the alcohol field. Dr Chikritzhs has strived to ensure that dissemination of her research findings extends well beyond the academic arena in order to inform and contribute to public discourse and debate

Population Health Congress 2008 A Global World – Practical Action for Health and Well-being Dr Jane Hocking Jane Hocking is an epidemiologist whose research interests include the epidemiology and control of sexually transmitted infections. Her research has led to an increased understanding of the epidemiology and control of genital Chlamydia trachomatis infection in Australia. She is currently running a number of projects that will inform chlamydia control policy in Australia and shape a possible future national chlamydia screening program.

Population Health Congress 2008 A Global World – Practical Action for Health and Well-being Dr Liz Milne Liz's current contribution to Public Health involves the ongoing development and leadership of the Cancer Epidemiology research programs. This includes the directorship of three national, multi-centre case-control studies: one of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, one of childhood brain tumours and one of embryonal tumours. These are the first population-based studies world-wide to investigate all these factors together.
