Information of fast track proposal JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards ) X Accessibility Guidelines for Office equipment Makoto YOSHIDA Standardization Office of Information Technology, METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) ISO/IEC JTC1 SWG-A Norway / April 2007

First Track proposal for JTC1 Proposal draft: JIS X :2006 Office equipment accessibility guidelines for elderly persons and persons with disabilities Proposal Date: April 2, 2007 Document No.: JTC1Nxxxx

JIS X Part5: Scope 1. Scope Part5 of JIS X8341 is intended to improve information accessibility required when primarily elderly persons, persons with disabilities and persons with temporary disabilities (hereafter referred to elderly persons and persons with disabilities) use office equipment. This part of JIS X8341 specifies a guideline to be considered for planning, developing and designing office equipment. Note In part5 of JIS X8341, office equipment refers to copying machines, multifunction devices, and page printers used in office environments. Multifunction devices correspond to the definition in JIS X 6910( =ISO/IEC 21117) 2. Normative references ISO/IEC 21117(=JIS X 6910) Information technology -- Office equipment -- Copying machines and Multi- function devices -- Information to be included in specification sheets and related test methods ISO/FDIS (=JIS X ) Ergonomics of human-system interaction - Part 20: Accessibility guidelines for information/communication technology (ICT) equipment and service

JIS X Part5: Outline Requirements and examples for major disability attributes are described in the “basic requirements” section. Requirements and examples for product functions are described in later section (after “basic requirement”) This standard includes “Basic function” and scope of operation table. This shows operation tasks for each function(copy, facsimile, scanning)

Examples of basic requirement a) Office equipment shall be operable and usable even when it is difficult to obtain information through vision. Example 1. When notifying the user of an operating state or an error of the office equipment, use auditory method as well, rather than just providing visual information. b) Office equipment shall be operable and usable even when it is difficult to obtain information through hearing Example 1. When notifying the user of an operating state of the office equipment, or of an error, visual methods such as screen display shall be possible, rather than just providing auditory information. g) Office equipment shall be operable and usable from a seated position like using a wheelchair Example 2. The control panel’s angle is adjustable to the user.

Examples of Requirements for functions of product a) Display requirements 1) Where text is printed on operable controls, it shall be of an appropriate size and contrast. 2) A screen display device shall support functions such as character zooming and contrast adjustment. b) Sound information requirements 1) When voice output is used, it shall be possible to hear this output through a commercially available headphone or earphone. c) Shape requirements 1) Keys important to operation, such as a Start key or Stop key, shall be distinguishable with vision and touch. Example : The “5” key on a numeric keypad is to have a protrusion to make it distinguishable (refer to See JIS S 0011*). *JIS S0011 was proposed for ISO/TC159 as NWIP

Examples of Basic operation (for Copying) TaskOperationOperation task Access ( 1 ) Preparationa) Setting the document 1) Glass surfaceOpen the automatic document feeder (ADF) or document (plate) cover. Place the document on the document plate glass. Verify the document setting position. Close the automatic document feeder or document (plate) cover. 2) Automatic document feeder tray Place the document in the automatic document feeder. Operate the document setting guide. Verify the document position. Job Settingsa) Function selectionSelect the copy functions ( 2 ). b) SettingUse key input to set the number of sheets. Operationa) StartupPress the (copy) start key. Completiona) Document recovery 1) Glass surfaceOpen the automatic document feeder or document (plate) cover. Recover the document from the document plate glass.

Merit ・ Manufacturer's merit: This standard has presented the performance goal (requirements for basic operation) This guideline contribute to improve the efficiency of product development. ・ User’s merit: O ne can easily understand the functions of the product by reading the requirements and ample detailed examples of the standard.

Contribution to SWG-A works JIS X was used to revise the N 169 User Needs Summary (See N186) JIS X has been tried for user needs mapping by AdHoc9
