Coaxial Cable - Basics Coaxial cable is used to move (transmit RF energy (power) from point “A” to point “B” with maximum efficiency (minimum loss) Minimum loss = maximum power to the antenna for optimum coverage (footprint) Tradeoffs are size, handling and cost versus minimum loss
Coax Cable Design - Electrical Attenuation (Loss): –Measure of efficiency The larger the cable, the lower the loss The lower the loss, the higher the efficiency –Loss (dB) = 10 x log (Power In/Power Out) 0 dB (no loss) = 100% efficiency 3dB loss = 50% efficiency (P I /P O = 2/1)
