Winter Driving Safety Tips

Winter Driving  Drivers should be able to recognize and effectively deal with hazardous driving conditions  Prepare yourself mentally for winter driving conditions  Remain calm when driving in inclement weather  Be extra cautious when driving in mountains  Watch carefully for black ice

Winter Driving Tips  Make sure your vehicle is in top condition before each trip  Do a complete and thorough pre trip inspection  Start a little slower drive a little slower  Compensate for poor traction by driving slower  Brake and accelerate slowly  Avoid sudden starts and stops which can lead to loss of control  Give yourself extra space in front and behind  Give yourself room to take evasive action in an emergency  Increasing following distance gives more time to react

Winter Driving Tips  Ice on your windshield means ice on the roads  Ice doesn’t have to be packed on the road to be dangerous  Keep your eye on the temperature  Water freezes at 32 degrees  Look for spray coming up from other vehicles  If spray is coming off the tires it’s likely road is just wet  Watch for other warning signs  Four wheelers spun out in the median is a sign of icy roads

Slips, Trips, & Falls Weather conditions wet ice Oil coated scrap slick when walking on trip hazards Might want to walk another way to prevent injury! Driver Awareness  How To Correct A Skid on A Slippery Surface  If you find yourself in a skid, steer in the same direction that the rear is sliding towards. Don’t brake, simply get off the gas if you need to slow to match your speed of travel with the speed of you tires to regain traction  When you began getting traction, turn back in the opposite direction to straighten out your vehicle.  Straighten out your steering wheel and regain control of your truck. Remember not to brake or accelerate quickly or you will lose traction again
