GPA At the end of this lesson students should be able to define, calculate and discus the importance of a GPA

WHAT IS A GPA?  GPA = Grade Point Average.  The GPA is calculated using both grade information and course credit information. The GPA is usually based on a 4.0 scale  Cumulative GPA – is calculated on all high school level courses (passed and failed) taken in middle school, high school, and dual enrollment.  HOPE GPA – is calculated on all English, math, science, social studies, and modern language class completed in high school or through dual enrollment.  Academic GPA - is calculated on all English, math, science, social studies, and modern language class completed in high school or through dual enrollment.  Weighted GPA – uses a different scale (4.5 or 5.0). Usually the most rigorous (AP & dual enrollment) coursed are weighted.  Unweighted GPA - a GPA calculated on a 4.0 scale

HOW TO CALCULATE A GPS  Conversion Chart  A = 4  B = 3  C = 2  F = 0  How to Calculate:  Multiply the number of A’s by 4, the number of B’s by e, the number of C’s by 2, and the number of F’s by 0.  Add together to get the total.  Divide the total in #2 by the total number of classes taken.

HOW TO CALCULATE A GPA - EXAMPLE No. of A’s=2X4=8 No. of B’s=1X3=3 No. of C’s=1X2=2 No. of F’s=0X0=0 Total=413 GPA=3.25 (13 divided by 4)  1. Student A has the following grades for last semester. Complete her GPA.  1. English B  2. Algebra C  3. Biology A  4. Spanish 1 A

CALCULATE A GPA  Student B has the following grades for last semester. Compute his GPA  1. World History B  2. Biology F  3. English C  4. Health/Personal Fitness A

HOPE & ZELL MILLER

HELPING OUTSTANDING PUPILS EDUCATIONALLY (HOPE)  Students must graduate from high school with a 3.0 GPA as calculated by the Georgia Student Finance Commission. This GPA is often referred to as the HOPE GPA.  Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA in college.  If a falls below a 3.0 GPA in college, he/she may only regain the HOPE Scholarship one time.  The HOPE Scholarship will not pay for remedial courses.  A student may receive HOPE until:  The student has earned the first professional degree  The student has attempted 127 semester hours.  The seventh anniversary of your high school graduation.

HOPE PAYS  The award amount will be a percentage of the immediately preceding year’s HOPE Award amount.

ZELL MILLER SCHOLAR PROGRAM  Eligibility  Graduate from an eligible high school with at least a 3.7 HOPE GPA.  SAT Score of at least 1200 on critical reading and math; ACT composite score of at least 26  Graduate from an eligible high school as the valedictorian or salutatorian  Maintain a 3.3 GPA in college to remain Zell Miller eligible  Must also meet HOPE eligibility  There is no opportunity to gain or regain Zell Miller in college.

ZELL MILLER PAYS  100 % of the standard tuition charges.

HOPE GRANT  Only available for students seeking a certificate or diploma at a branch of the Technical College System of Georgia or a unit of the University System of Georgia.  Students must meet achievement standards by maintaining a 2.0 GPA in college.  HOPE Grant funds will pay a percentage amount of the standard tuition charges from the previous year.  No student with a baccalaureate degree can receive the HOPE Grant
