Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) one of the earliest form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) By Jérôme DIDOT Friday, Dec. 14th

Brief Introduction to CBT Ideal to achieve goals of wellbeing & happiness Different reactions when goals are blocked: - healthy and helpful way - painful emotions and maladaptive behavors Resort to CBT start from uncomfortable situations difficult to handle and tending to bring negative thoughts, emotions, physical feelings or actions. 2

Brief Introduction to CBT CBT approach helps to change both: - the way you think as ‘Cognitive’ - what you do as ‘Behaviour’ One of the most effective psychological treatments to cure anxiety or moderate to severe depression. But, require patients to be ready enough to talk… 3

Dr. Albert Ellis: founder of the REBT 4 Born in Pittsburgh September 27, 1913 Raised his childhood in New York City Degree in psychology at Columbia Univ. American psychotherapist/psychologist Method for resolving emotional disturbs: REBT In 1959: Creation of the “Albert Ellis Institute”, to PROMOTE theory as educative & preventive

How REBT can improve your daily life... 5 "Men are disturbed not by events, but by the views which they take of them” REBT : a set of techniques & variety of methods  powerful REBT technique: "disputing” GAIN better control on emotional life & behaviors CHANGE irrational beliefs into rational ones

How REBT can improve your daily life common levels of irrational beliefs: 1 st level: self-pity. 2 nd level: anxiety, depression, shame & guilt. 3 rd level: rage, passive-aggression & violent acts.  Less demanding combined with more flexibility lead to healthy emotions & helpful behaviors Self / Other / Life unconditional acceptance

A key analysis technique: the ABC Model 7 Activating event (A) Beliefs (B) Consequences (C) Through the “ABC Model”: A does not cause C  This is B that causes C.

How does a REBT session goes? 8 From 6 weeks to 6 months From 5 to 20 weekly or fortnightly sessions Between 30 and 60 minutes per session - Individually, - with a group of people in a similar situation, - from a ‘do-it yourself’ book, - from a computer program. First 2 to 4 sessions: the therapist will check that the treatment well suits to you, depending on how you feel comfortable with it

How does a REBT session goes? 9 First 2 to 4 sessions: CHECK the suitability of the treatment, BE ASKED questions about past life (background) Next sessions: BREAK problem down into sub-parts (ABC Model) Each session: AGREE on what to discuss with the therapist
