Shame and Daddy Tucked the Blanket Individual and Society Shame and Daddy Tucked the Blanket Dr. Peih-ying Lu Dec. 2, 2010

Pre-reading Questions Please define “shame” and discuss what kind of things that might cause it.

In-class discussion List those details that show the extent of the poverty in which the author lives. Explain why the school incident made Richard feel such deep shame. Of what is he ashamed? How does this shame alter Richard’s attitude and actions?

Richard’s behavior at school—his inability to concentrate and his constant movement—is interpreted by the teacher as one thing and by Richard as another. How does the teacher view Richard’s behavior? How does Richard explain it? Why might their perceptions be so different?

A comparison of Shame and Daddy Tucked the Blanket reveals interesting similarities as well as differences. Compare the family situation and the poverty of the children Compare the ways the children learned shame and humiliation Compare the ways that lesson affected them
