Christmas plants and traditions from Hungary

Apple Apple is the symbol of health and unity. The head of the family cuts an apple to as many parts as there arefamily members at Christmas dinner. Everybody gets and eats his or her slice.

Christmas wheat A beautiful Hungarian custom on the feast of St. Lucy is to plant the "Christmas wheat." Pressed gently into a pot of garden soil, watered, and kept in a moderately warm room, the wheat will be sprouted soft green by Christmas. Then the children may carry it to the creche as a gift for the Child Jesus, symbolic of the Eucharistic bread. For families living in country where wheat is grown, saving a handful of seed for this custom might be an annual event.

Poppy seed and Beigli Beigli is an authentic Hungarian pastry roll that is often served for Christmas. It is sweet and has many varieties of fillings, the most common of which are poppy seeds and walnuts. According to the popular belief eating poppy seed, beans, peas and lentils at Christmas make people to be rich.

Walnut Walnuts are rounded, single- seeded stone fruits of the walnut tree. The walnut fruit is enclosed in a green, leathery, fleshy husk. This husk is inedible.
