Conquistador.- One of the conquerors who claimed and ruled land in the Americas for the Spanish government in the 1500s. Hernan Cortes.- Conquistador who conquered the Aztec empire. Francisco Pizarro.- Conquistador who conquered the Incas Mestizo.- In Latin America, a person of mixed Spanish and Native American Ancestry. Hacienda.- A large farm or plantation

 In the 1400s, the Europeans nation of Spain and Portugal were searching for new trade routes to Asia.  They Knew that in Asia they would find goods such as spices and silks.  These goods could be traded for huge profits in Europe.

 Chritopher Columbus, an Italian explorer thought he could reach Asia by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean.  Columbus believed the distance around the world was shorter than it is.  Columbus asked Portugal to sponsor his voyage, but Portugal refused  Queen Isabella of Spain finally agreed.  Columbus set sail in early August, 1492  Some 10 weeks later, he spotted the land.
