The Silk Road ________________________________________________________ o A major trade route that connected China with Europe o New goods, a lot of money, and CULTURAL DIFFUSION! Don’t forget the PLAGUE!

The Mongols: ________________________________________________________ Just like Europe, Asia is full of warring kingdoms: The Mongols in Eastern Asia are just one of those kingdoms which is made up of dozens of smaller tribes

The Mongols: ________________________________________________________ Genghis Khan: o Born as “Temujin”, he renamed himself Genghis Khan (“Ruler of All”) after he united the Mongol tribes o Moved to conquer all neighboring lands o It’s estimated that he killed roughly 40 million people during his 21 years of conquest Resisting cities were destroyed Cooperating cities paid Two words: STONE COLD.

Comparing Empires: ________________________________________________________ Alexander the Great: About 2 million square miles Let’s compare Genghis Khan’s Empire with some of the other one’s that we’ve studied in class… The Roman Empire: About 2.2 million square miles

Comparing Empires: ________________________________________________________ Genghis Khan’s Mongol Empire: About 8 million square miles That’s equal to both of the other empires… x2!

Let’s do some math: ________________________________________________________ Genghis Khan: o 8 million square miles of empire o 40 million dead o 20 years of war o 5 dead for each square mile conquered o 2,000,000 dead each year (or 5480 dead each day!) o 400,000 square miles gained each year (or 1100 per day!) To put that in perspective: He murdered all of California and took over an area 2.5 times the size of the United States
