Geographic Location: Located in the heart of Central America Almost 43,450 square miles, it’s size is roughly the same as that of the state of Ohio. Honduras has shores with both the Caribbean sea and the Pacific Ocean. Some of the best Archaeological sites of the Mayan world are located in Honduras.

History Honduras was first occupy by the Mayan Indians. On July 30, 1502, Christopher Columbus discovered Honduras. He landed on the Bay Islands.

Timeline 1502 – Christopher Columbus lands in Honduras 1525 – Spain begins conquest of Honduran territory 1539 – Spain succeeds in the conquest of Honduran territory after bitter struggles with the native population 1810 – Overthrow of the king of Spain by Napoleon 1800 ′ s – Northern coast falls to British buccaneers and British protectorate established over the coastal areas 1821 – Independence gained from Spain 1821 – Honduras becomes part of the Mexican empire 1823 – Honduras breaks away from Mexico 1823 – Honduras becomes part of the Federal Republic of Central America, (also known as the United Provinces of Central America) which includes Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica 1840 – Honduras becomes fully independent following the dissolution of the Federal Republic of Central America -

Government Honduras has a government of democratic constitutional republic. There are two political parties. The Liberal Party of Honduras (PLH) and the National Party of Honduras (PNH) The president serves a four year term One of the poorest countries in Central America due to unemployment.

Economy Bananas and coffee are the main exports in Honduras. The currency for Honduras is the Lempira, named in honor of the native leader who fought the Spaniards

Ancestries Honduras homes people of many ancestries. Garifuna communities in Europe known as (the Black caribs) are found on the bay islands of Roaton, on Cayos Cochinos or (the Hog Islands). Ethnic groups: 90% Mestizo 7% Amerindian 2% Black 1% White

Ancestries continued African slaves were brought to Honduras to work the plantations. They have influence the Honduran culture, music and foods.

Foods The most reliable food source is corn because nearly all of their traditional food recipes contain corn. The national dish of Honduras is Plato tipico. Generally contains red beans, rice, salty dry cheese and mantequilla with some kind of meat. Another popular dish is a Baleada. The baleada contains refried beans sandwich between a flour or corn tortilla.

Most Hondurans are members of the Roman Catholic church. Only a few people are Protestant. The religious holidays Hondurans celebrate are Christmas and Easter.

Preschool is where the system begins. It continues from Element school to secondary school then University. Education in Honduras is free in the public system. Most school are bilingual teaching both Spanish and English.

Health Care Access to health care are directly tied to income levels. The poor generally can not afford health care. Malnutrition, Lack of running water and sanitation facilities are serious cause for stunt growth and death in children. Infectious and parasitic diseases are the leading cause of death in Honduras.
