MAINE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION Current Ozone Monitoring Network

MAINE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

Meteorological conditions conducive (warmer and drier than normal in the midwest) to ozone production and transport into the Ozone Transport Region Wet summer in Maine

MAINE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION Meteorological conditions not conducive to ozone production and transport into the Ozone Transport Region Temperatures conducive to ozone production in the northern part (NYC to Maine) of the OTR however it was a wet summer in the East.

MAINE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION Meteorological conditions not conducive to ozone production and transport into the Ozone Transport Region Another wet summer in Maine Transport temperatures below normal in the Midwest and core of the OTR Cooler than normal except in eastern areas of the OTR

MAINE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

PROPOSED OZONE STANDARD REVISION Final October 1, 2015 Most likely 65 ppb or 70 ppb for both the primary and secondary 8-hour Ozone NAAQS – with new AQI breakpoints Attainment/nonattainment Designations will use data Proposed changes to data handling conventions Only looks at 17 of 24 possible 8-hr running averages to eliminate “double counting” of exceedances (could miss some exceedances) For days with less than 75% data recovery rates (< 13 instead of 17 valid 8- hr averages) the daily maximum 8-hr concentration is valid if it’s greater than the NAAQS.

MAINE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION EXAMPLE OF A MISSED EXCEEDANCE OF A 70 PPB NAAQS USING THE PROPOSED DATA HANDLING CONVENTIONS Only look at 17 of 24 8-hour periods?

MAINE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION Differences due to proposed data handling conventions

Suggested Changes to Ozone Network Move Bowdoinham site closer to coastline (Phippsburg/Reid SP?) Move North Lovell site to a more exposed (higher elevation) location
