The Three Ways We Persuade Ethos (hand) Logos (head) Pathos (heart)

Where and when do people use persuasion? Commercials (radio, TV, internet, etc.) Written documents (articles, essays, newspapers, magazines, etc.) When someone wants you to do something for them!!

What is ethos? Ethos: refers to the credibility, respect or authority/expertise a person has.

Why use ethos as a method to persuade? We tend to believe people whom we respect. Celebrities we like and admire appear more believable. An authority or expert on the subject can appear more trustworthy. When a product suggests it is authentic or “just like the real thing”, we are more likely to buy it.

Ethos Example: Claim: Students should be allowed to use cell phones during school hours. Write supporting evidence to convince me using ethos. 5

What is logos? Logos: persuading by the use of reasoning and logic.

How to use logos as a method to persuade? Facts, statistics (%, numbers) Visual charts Research studies Progressive Insurance Commercial

Logos Example: Claim: Students should be allowed to use cell phones during school hours. Write supporting evidence to convince me using logos.

What is pathos? Pathos: appealing to emotions - convincing you by how it makes you feel.

How to use pathos as a method to persuade? Personal experience/anecdotes Anyone/anything you might care about An appeal to pathos causes an audience not just to respond emotionally, but to relate with the writer's/speaker’s point of view--to feel what the writer/speaker feels. McDonalds Commercial State Farm Commercial

Pathos Example: Claim: Students should be allowed to use cell phones during school hours. Write supporting evidence to convince me using logos 11
