Propaganda WWII and YOU

Propaganda In your notes, jot down any ideas you have about propaganda: What IS propaganda? Does propaganda affect you in your daily life?

Propaganda is… “communication aimed at influencing a community of people toward some cause or position.” …How would you do that!?

How? I’ll tell you… #1: Through the clever use of language #2: Through image and brands (TV commercials, news programs, magazine ads, even movies!)

Propaganda… ...is like an argument that you didn’t know you were in. Someone is trying to convince you to think a certain way about something…and you usually don’t know it’s happening.

Remember… Propaganda is ANY technique that attempts to influence the opinions, emotions, attitudes, or behaviors of a group of people IN ORDER TO BENEFIT THE SPONSOR! The purpose is to PERSUADE!

7 Kinds of Propaganda (there are others, but these are the BIG 7) Glittering Generalities Mudslinging Testimonial Bandwagon Card-Stacking Transfer Plain Folks

Glittering Generalities Words of praise for a product or person Using emotional words emphasizing things like goodness or patriotism Using emotional images like happy families or sexy people

Mudslinging Trash-talking another product or person Name Calling

Testimonial A famous person recommends a product Political endorsements

Bandwagon An appeal to be part of a group.

Card Stacking Manipulating information to make a product appear better than it is often by unfair comparison or omitting facts.

Transfer A appeal which helps a person to imagine themselves as part of a picture.

Plain Folks Appealing to regular people's values like family or patriotism

Advertising to Politics In advertising, these propaganda techniques are useful to sell a product or even get you to believe something Propaganda is neither good nor bad. It’s just PERSUASIVE. In politics, these techniques are extremely useful to get you to believe something or participate in something.

Political Propaganda Today: What is its Purpose? What is it trying to persuade someone to think or do? Who is the Target? What are the Techniques? Which of the BIG 7?

From Politics to War… Here are some examples of propaganda used in World War II, by just a few of the countries involved.
