The different types and how to handle them calmly.

 ESSAY RULES 1) Stay on Topic 2) Write in English 3) Write Neatly 4) Use Logical Structure 5) Use Specific Examples 6) Relax

 ESSAY STRATEGIES The importance of the basic structure: introduction, body (supporting evidence), conclusion. It is very important that students stay on topic throughout their essay. Veering off topic is the quickest and easiest way to lose points on the essay. Remember the basic framework – read the prompt carefully, create an outline, write the essay from the outline.

Biographical Narrative (story about real person) Response to Literature (understanding of story) Expository Composition (information about topic) Business Letter (formal correspondence) Persuasive Composition (persuade reader)

Writing Application: Write a persuasive composition. a) Structure ideas and arguments in a sustained and logical fashion. b) Use specific rhetorical devices to support assertions (appeal to logic through reasoning, appeal to emotion, relate a personal anecdote). c) Clarify and defend position with relevant evidence (facts, opinions, quotations, commonly held beliefs or logical reasoning). d) Address readers’ concerns, counterclaims, biases, and expectations.

Please take out your Reader’s/Writer’s Journal and open to a new page with the above title. You are going to take down the following notes to help you with the ESSAY WRITING portion of the CaHSEE. When writing persuasively, keep these points in mind  Persuasive Composition seeks to persuade readers to do something or convince reader to believe something. types include: newspaper editorials and tributes Keep the following in mind when writing a persuasive essay:

Essay writing continued  Begin with a strong thesis statement that states your opinion or assertion. This is the idea that you want to convince readers to agree with or the action that you want them to take. A good thesis statement should be strong and assertive. A thesis statement establishes a consistent tone (the author’s attitude toward the subject) that is maintained throughout the piece.

Essay writing continued  Make logical, emotional, or ethical appeals to persuade your readers. You might appeal to logic by using clear reasoning and providing facts and other evidence. (Remember supporting evidence on page 177?) You might appeal to emotion by using words with strong connotations (the emotional impression of a word). You might appeal to ethical concerns by discussing values and other moral issues.

Essay writing continued  Support your opinion or assertion You might include examples, personal anecdotes, and analogies (supporting evidence, again, is on page 177!!!)  Address your audience. Understand the possible concerns and objections your readers may have and try to address them (counterclaim).

Finish the other part of the handout. Verbs was the work on Monday. Please continue with the second page titled “National Women’s Hall of Fame” answering questions and giving reasons why your answers are correct. No credit will be given for “because it looks right,” “because it’s right,” “because I know,” and other similar answers.

If you were not here on Wednesday, please obtain a “Modifiers” handout. You are responsible for putting this work into your Reader’s/Writer’s Journal.
