Presentation transcript:

“Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves.” – Abraham Lincoln. Both JFK and MLK allude to Abraham Lincoln in their Civil Rights speeches. So, using the above quote, and a quote from each of the speeches, explain what similar idea is held by all three. Entry Task 10/24/14 Materials Needed: Journal, MLK and JFK speeches, Rhetoric devices sheet, writing utensil, and in 2 nd and 5 th - vocabulary

Discussion Chart- before you are put in groups, create this chart in your journal, and then fill out. MLKJFK Both

Discuss with your group Discuss techniques you put in the chart. Add to your chart (in a different color) based on what your peers shared. Then discuss the types of evidence each man used (similar and unique). o IE: they both referenced Abraham Lincoln and the fact it’s been 100 years since the slaves were freed. Keep a list below the chart in your journal.

Then with your group Create claim options- o Write 2 for technique similarities 1 that makes a statement regarding technique and audience: “In order to connect with and persuade his audience, Dr. King and President Kennedy each relied on the use of ethos by referring to the children of America.” 1 that focuses on the technique and its effect. 1 that focuses on a similarity of information/evidence. o Write 1 for evidentiary similarity: “Martin Luther King jr and John F. Kennedy both referenced the history and foundation of America persuade his audience.” o Write 2 for technique differences 2 that make a statement regarding technique and audience: “In order to connect with and persuade his audience, Dr. King used analogies, whereas President Kennedy relied primarily on logos.” 1 that focuses on the audience and purpose: “Dr. King’s audience was primarily composed of supporters so his purpose was to motivate them to continue their fight, whereas President Kennedy’s audience had varied beliefs so he had to focus on persuading them to support him and the equality movement”

Claim: “In order to connect with and persuade his audience, Dr. King and President Kennedy each relied on the use of ethos by referring to the children of America.” MLK used ethos: children JFK used ethos: children MLK’s use of ethos connects/persuad es audience JFK’s use of ethos connects/persuades audience “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” “As I have said before, not every child has an equal talent or an equal ability or an equal motivation, but they should have the equal right to develop their talent and their ability and their motivation, to make something of themselves.” MLK wraps his dream tightly with his children. He is motivating his audience to continue the fight because it is for their children: “little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.” JFK’s audience had a mix of beliefs and position on equality. The desire to protect the innocent unifies so he focused on statistics related to children: “ The Negro baby born in America today, regardless of the section of the Nation in which he is born, has about one-half as much chance of completing a high school as a white baby born in the same place on the same day […] a life expectancy which is 7 years shorter.”

Assignment Two paragraphs: each one complete and stand alone. 1)Using one of the group created claims, write a paragraph identifying a significant similarity between the two speeches. Use two pieces of evidence from EACH speech, followed by commentary. 2)Using one of the group created claims, write a paragraph identifying a significant difference between the two speeches. Use two pieces of evidence from EACH speech, followed by commentary. 3)Remember to include concluding sentences for each paragraph. DO NOT RESTATE CLAIM.
