Steinbeck uses several key phrases to reinforce the jumpy and suspicious nature of the men. We see this when George and Lennie talk of their dream and ‘jump as if caught doing something reprehensible’. The fact that they ‘jump’ suggests the nervy atmosphere in the bunkhouse. The way Candy speaks suggests that life is hard, but also that there is some humanity on the ranch. He tells that he ‘lost his hand right here on this ranch’, in a very matter of fact way. He does not use emotional or bitter words. This phrase (especially the words ‘right here) suggests that he accepts the tragic event as a fact of tough ranch life. Ranch life may be tough, but Candy’s language also demonstrates a gratitude that he has been kept on, despite not being ‘much good with on’y one hand’.
