May 15, 2013 Algebra 1

Test Setup 2 Modules 3 periods in AM (Module 1) Adjusted Lunch Schedule 3 Periods in PM (Module 2) Periods will run 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 5, 6, 8, 9 Module 1: Operations and Linear Equations/Inequalities Module 2: Linear Functions and Data Organizations *You are permitted to use a calculator and formula sheet

Module 1 Operations and Linear Equations/Inequalities 18 Multiple Choice Questions (1 pt.) 3 Open Ended Response Questions (4 pts.) Total points => (4) = 30

Module 1 Operations and Linear Equations/Inequalities Evaluating and Simplifying Square Roots Ordering Real Numbers Systems of Linear Equations/Inequalities – Graphing, Substitution, Elimination – Heavy on Analysis/Interpretation – Problem Solving Scenarios Polynomials and Factoring Solve/Analyze Linear Equations/Inequalities – Graphing and Solving – Again, heavy on analysis/interpretation – Problem Solving Scenarios

Module 2 Linear Functions and Data Organization 18 Multiple Choice Questions (1 pt.) 3 Open Ended Response Questions (4 pts.) Total points => (4) = 30 Each module is exactly 50%

Module 2 Linear Functions and Data Organization Functions – Is the relationship a function? – Domain and Range – Writing an equation from a pattern or graph Scatter Plots – Line of Best Fit/Predictions Bar Graphs, Histograms, Box and Whisker Plots, Stem and Leaf Plots – Mean, median, mode, range – Organization of data/analysis of graphs and charts Slope (Rate of Change) – Given a line, given 2 points, given an equation

Scoring Multiple Choice- 1 point each Open Ended Response- 4 point scale

Test Taking Strategy #1 READ!!! This is an algebra exam, not a numbers test. Read the directions for each problem set. Read the entire question/problem. As you get arrive at a solution, read the problem again to make sure you use your solution to answer the question. Sometimes the information that you are looking for is not as complicated as the problem seems. – Identify variables.

Test Taking Strategy #1 Example 1: John bought five apples and six oranges for a total of $6.50. At the same store, Tina bought six oranges and five apples for $7.00. The following system of equations represents the problem: 5a + 6r = 6.5 6a + 5r = 7 What does the variable a represent? a) Cost of an apple b) Cost of an orange c) Number of apples purchased d) Number of oranges purchased

Test Taking Strategy #1 Example 2: Your cell phone bill, B, can be determined by a flat rate for your plan, p, and any overage charges and fees from messaging, m, or data use, d. The formula B =.20m +.35d + p is used to determine a particular cell phone bill. What does the.20 represent in the formula? a) 20% of the phone bill b) $0.20 per message c) $0.20 per message exceeding the plans’ limit d) None of the above

Test Taking Strategy #2-#3 Strategy #2 ANSWER EVERY PART OF EVERY QUESTION or LEAVE NOTHING BLANK Strategy #3 CHECK AND RECHECK.. There should be sufficient time in each module to finish if you are prepared… go back and check your work

Test Taking Strategy #4 Work Backwards!!! Use the solutions (aka- plug the answers into the original problem) This will not only help you arrive at solutions, but is an aid in checking. Only do this if you don’t know how do complete the algebraic procedure Example #1: Find the value of x in the following system of equations 3x + 4y = 12 x – 4y = 16 a) 1b) 2c) 7d) -2

Test Taking Strategy #4 Is x = 1? Is x = 2? Is x = 7? 3(1) + 4y = 12 3(2) + 4y = 12 3(7) + 4y = 12 4y = 9 4y = 6 4y = -9 y = 2.25 y = 1.5 y = (1)– 4y = 16 (2) – 4y = 16 (7) – 4y = 16 -4y = 15 -4y = 14 -4y = 9 y = y = -3.5 y = NO!!!!! NO!!!!! YES!!!!!

Test Taking Strategy #5 Eliminate Bad Solutions *If you are not sure of the correct procedure, eliminate the obviously incorrect solutions *This increases your chance of getting the problem correct should you have to use an educated guess. *In graphs or coordinate geometry, ALWAYS look to identify the slope and y-intercept of the line. Example: Which graph shows the equation y = 4 – x?

Test Taking Strategy #5 Ways to eliminate bad solutions here? y-intercept is 4.. So the last 2 are eliminated Slope is negative, so the first one is eliminated

On Test Day… Calculators You may use Graphing Calculators – Teacher must see that all memory, including programs, have been completely erased Calculators that perform algebra NOT permitted We will provide scientific calculators

On Test Day… Supplies We will provide the following: – Two #2 pencils – Scientific Calculators – Graph Paper – Other Scratch Paper

On Test Day… Time/Health You will be permitted extra time to complete the test if needed, so don’t feel rushed. If you are sick and have to leave in the middle of a Module, you WILL NOT be permitted to finish it. – Cannot leave and come back in the middle of the test If you leave school after a Module 1 is complete or before Module 2 begins, then you will have make up time.

On Test Day… Personal Items All electronic devices will be turned off and placed in a box (cell phones, kindles, iPods, etc.). You will get it back once everyone has completed the Module. – Suggested that you keep electronic devices at home or in your locker turned off on the day of the test Bring a book to read after the exam is complete – Do not bring work or projects from other classes due to the risk of violating state policies.

On Test Day… Best Performance Get a good night’s rest the night before. Eat well at breakfast and lunch. – Helps gain energy and prevents headaches!!! Try your best! Have a positive attitude about the exam! – The Power of Positive Thought.

On Test Day…
