The Eliminate Project

What is it? Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. Neonatal tetanus kills one baby every nine minutes. Nearly 60,000 newborn children every year. A significant number of women also die due to maternal tetanus. The effects of the disease are excruciating Tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.

What is it? (cont.) To eliminate MNT from the Earth: – 129 million mothers and their future babies must be immunized. This requires: – Vaccines – Syringes – Safe storage – Transportation – Thousands of skilled staff It will take: – $110 million – The dedicated work of UNICEF – Every member of the Kiwanis family.

What can you do to help? Spread the word about maternal and neonatal tetanus to your club members and to everyone in your school. – To do this set up a table with brochures about maternal and neonatal tetanus, sell the ELIMINATE bracelets, and just ask for donations. ELIMINATE pins: – You will need: Lifesavers (individually wrapped), ʺ It's a boy! ʺ and/or ʺ It's a girl! ʺ ribbon, small safety pins, a hot glue gun with glue sticks or super glue. – Description: Hot glue/super glue a boy or girl ribbon on the wrapper, then run the safety pin through the wrapper on the other side to make a wearable pin which you can distribute or sell to raise money for the ELIMINATE Project.

Six Cents Initiative

What is it? In order to stay healthy, it is important to drink 1.5 to 2 liters of clean water every day. More than 2.6 billion people lack even the most basic sanitation facilities and safe drinking water sources. One in five children in developing countries is susceptible to diseases caused by bacteria that grow in unsafe waters 5,000 die every day. The most common diseases lead to diarrhea and dehydration, which can lead to death if untreated. At a cost of only 6 cents: – a mixture of sugar and salt called oral rehydration salts (ORS) offers the most effective and cheapest way to save lives during dehydration. CKI is working with UNICEF to provide these rehydration salts to those in need.

What is it? (cont.) Designed to help children get the rehydrating salts they need to survive dehydration spells. With the money raised, UNICEF also is working to provide long-term solutions for the problem – which includes providing clean water resources through the installation of filtration and sanitation systems. – Water filters installed in schools and communal areas can benefit entire communities. Ultimately, the goal is to educate individuals on safe water and hygiene practices, and to provide supplies to produce safe water supplies for communities.

What can you do to help? Have a table set up at school with information about Six Cents Initiative with a water bottle that is filled with dirt and water and when talking about it tell them how awful it would be to have to drink this, and then have another water bottle that is empty for people to make donations. Circle K clubs and members wishing to make donations to the “Six Cents Initiative” should direct checks to the Kiwanis International Foundation (3636 Woodview Trace, Indianapolis, IN 46268) with a notation that it is for UNICEF/water and sanitation programming.

CKI Service Week

What is it? Join other Circle K International clubs around the world during CKI Service Week. We have CKI Service Week to increase the awareness of: – CKI – The Kiwanis family – CKI’s service partners: Better World Books March of Dimes Students Team Up to Fight Hunger (STUFH) UNICEF

What can you do to help? During CKI Service Week please do your part by participating whether it be by telling someone about CKI and our Kiwanis family, or by doing service projects that help our service partners.

Kiwanis One-Day

What is it? This event is inspired by Past International President Nelson Tucker’s initiative to create a day that unites the entire Kiwanis family in service. Annual Kiwanis service initiative observed worldwide. More than 600,000 Kiwanis family member participate every year. On this day every club is urged to join with the rest of the Kiwanis family for a day of united service. It provides an opportunity to showcase the Kiwanis family and our commitment to service in each community.

What can you do to help? The best way you can help is to contact our local Kiwanis club, Key clubs, Builder clubs, and K-kids and ask them to participate in Kiwanis One day with your club. It doesn’t matter what you do as long as you are doing service with your Kiwanis family.
