Head Start Transition WELCOME!

Coming To Kindergarten Build pre-reading and beginning reading skills Build a rich vocabulary to help understanding in reading, writing, listening, and speaking Shapes, colors, measurement, counting (100), arithmetic, categorizing, sorting

Texas Primary Reading Inventory (TPRI) Tells us and you if your child has all the skills needed to be a good reader AND if they don’t, it tells us where we need to focus to make him/her successful Given in October, January, and April Is followed up with a letter sent home to you about your child’s progress

Texas Primary Reading Inventory (TPRI) Phonemic Awareness Hearing and manipulating sounds Graphophonemic Knowledge Understanding letter/symbol name and linking the sound to the letter Listening Comprehension Understanding a story that is read aloud

What can we do at home?

Listen to your child practice his/her DECODABLE BOOK Meant to build phonics skills and fluency

Ask Questions What was the most important part of the story to you? What would you have done if you were that character in the story? What do you think the author was trying to tell us? What does this story remind you of? How would you change the story?

Let your child see you as a reader.

BE INVOLVED: Benefits of Parental Involvement The research overwhelmingly demonstrates that parent involvement in children's learning is positively related to achievement. Further, the research shows that the more intensively parents are involved in their children's learning, the more beneficial are the achievement effects. This holds true for all types of parent involvement in children's learning and for all types and ages of students.

Ways to be Involved Assist teachers during small group instruction Go on field trips Offer help with materials Work with your child at home Read to your child every night Practice letters, sounds, and counting
