With the new highway, we can go from Tsukuba to Nikko without going through Tokyo area. It shortens the travel time to ~1.5 hour, and reduces the risk of delay in schedule due to traffic jam. One enormous quarried cavern was used during WW2 for underground fighter plane assembly, and this is now open for tourism.
