Lesson 10

How does God want us to honor his Word?

Why does God want us to receive his Word eagerly? Leviticus 23:3 There are six days when you may work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest, a day of sacred assembly. You are not to do any work; wherever you live, it is a Sabbath to the LORD. restworship No work on Saturday (Sabbath)

Why does God want us to receive his Word eagerly? Colossians 2:16-17 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ. fulfilled on the cross shadow or picture of Christ is a rest

Why does God want us to receive his Word eagerly? Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. applies to us today study his Word worship

How does God want us to honor his Word? Acts 17:11 Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. eagerly read it gladly hear it and

How does God want us to honor his Word? John 6:45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me. learn it

How does God want us to honor his Word? John 20:31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. believe it

Key Point #2 God wants us to honor his Word not just by hearing it but also by gladly learning, believing, and obeying it.

When do we sin against this commandment? Hebrews 10:25 Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. refuse to hear and read it

When do we sin against this commandment? Luke 14:16-24 Jesus replied: “A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’ “But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’ “Another said, ‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.’ “Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’ “The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.’ ”‘Sir,’ the servant said, ‘what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.’ “Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and make them come in, so that my house will be full. I tell you, not one of those men who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.’” let pleasures and worries crowd it out of our lives

When do we sin against this commandment? Hebrews 4:2 For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith. refuse to believe it

When do we sin against this commandment? James 1:22-24 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. refuse to obey it

Key Point #3 We sin against this commandment when we refuse to hear or read God’s Word, believe it, and obey it.

Bob has good intentions. He promises himself that he’s going to take some time each evening to read God’s Word. But most nights he forgets. He comes home, turns on the TV, and ends up watching it instead. He’s not happy with himself about this, and he asks you what he should do. What are some things you might suggest?

Agree or Disagree… It’s okay to miss church if the only job you can get to support yourself is on Sunday.

What’s wrong here? Teri says that she doesn’t have to go to Bible class or read the Bible at home because she gets all the spiritual strength she needs from the Sunday worship service.

Lesson 10 God wants me to honor his Word by hearing, reading, learning, believing, and obeying it gladly and regularly.
