Learning Objectives: I can explain…  …how Sexual Reproduction is different from Asexual Reproduction.  …how sex cells are created and how this is different.
Meiosis and Mutations. Remember:  Mitosis - takes place in regular body cells (somatic cells) and you end up with 2 identical diploid (2n) cells where.

Mitosis vs. Meiosis. What is the difference Mitosis is asexual reproduction. Does not produce a new organism. Mitosis is asexual reproduction. Does not.
Meiosis Cell division process whereby the number of chromosomes in a diploid cell is reduced by half through the separation of homologous chromosomes.

Asexual Reproduction vs. Sexual Reproduction Asexual Reproduction – Diploid cells give rise to identical diploid cells – DNA comes from one parent cell.

Gamete

 A gamete is either a male or female sex cell.  These are produced in their respective sex organs.  A female only produces these cells once, but a male continues making these cells forever.

Fertilization

 Fertilization is the fusion of male and female gametes.  This happens through sex (and pollination)  When this happens a baby is made (or a seed)

Zygote

 A zygote is the diploid cell formed when a sperm fertilizes an egg.  The term literally means joined or yoked.  This only happens in sexual reproduction

Pollination

 Pollination occurs when the male reproductive organs in a plant transfer pollen to the female reproductive organ in a different plant (usually in the same species)  This is usually done through bees and butterfly's  This enables the plant to be fertilized

Memory Game THERE ARE SOME TERMS NOT DEFINED IN THIS SLIDE SHOW
