Even by the standards of the 11th century Edward had a particularly unfortunate upbringing; his father was dethroned, his brother was brutally murdered by his stepbrother and his mother abandoned him to marry the man who dethroned his father. The result was a man lacking in confidence, untrusting and, ultimately weak. As a consequence of his upbringing, Edward was relatively easily controlled by his three most powerful earls. He was never able to fully impose his will on the kingdom and thus his upbringing – and resulting personality - had a fundamental impact on Edward’s overall effectiveness as king.
