Connecting to the Constitution What does limited government mean? Government is not all-powerful – monarch's power is limited – granted rights to nobles and landholders

Where did the concept of limited government first appear? The Magna Carta What is a monarch? The ruler of a country

What is a representative government? People elect delegates to make laws and conduct government. How did the Glorious Revolution change the idea of government in England? No ruler would have more power than the legislature

What are the rights in the English Bill of Rights? The monarch could not suspend Parliament's laws. The monarch also could not create special courts, impose taxes, or raise and army without their consent.

Members of Parliament would be freely elected and guaranteed free speech during meetings. Every citizen would have the right to a fair trial by jury. Cruel and unusual punishments would be banned.

What traditions of representative government had English settlers of the colonies learned in England? The ruler is not above the law; they expected a voice in government and other basic rights.

What was the name of the first representative assembly in the English colonies? The House of Burgesses Why was the Mayflower Compact written? The Pilgrims realized they needed rules to govern themselves.
