Presentation transcript:

Washington and the New Nation By: Lucy Keough

Who created the first cabinet and why were these departments created? Who were some of the notable Americans on that first cabinet? George Washington created the first cabinet for advice and assistance. Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, Henry Knox, and Edmund Randolph

What did the Judiciary Act of 1789 do for the new nation? What was the most important element of the Judiciary Act? It established the entire federal judiciary, which initially was a Supreme Court of six judges, 3 circuit courts, and 13 district courts. It also established the Supreme Court as the mediator of all disputes between states. It brought the Supreme Court and the Judiciary branch to the U.S. Government

To take care of Debt, what compromise did Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison reach for repaying states debts? The North wanted to assume states debt but the south didn't, so the south said they would vote for the act if the U.S. capital was moved down south. So, the capital was moved from Philadelphia to D.C. Thomas Jefferson James Madison

What was Jefferson and Hamilton’s contrasting views of National government? Hamilton: more in federal government Jefferson: limited national government, more power to local and state Hamilton wanted the U.S. To be more like Britain with well-educated rulers. He also believed that the constitution was loose and the national bank was constitutional. Jefferson thought the democracy should be led by farmers and trades people. Jefferson thought the constitution was strict and national bank unconstitutional.

Why did Jefferson oppose the creation of the Bank of the United States? Like I said before, Jefferson thought that the bank was unconstitutional. He believed that the Constitution didn't give the national government the power to establish a bank. Hamilton disagreed on this point too.

What was the Neutrality Proclamation? What dispute did Jay’s Treaty settle? What were its provisions? It was an announcement issued by George Washington, declaring the nation neutral in the conflict between France and Great Britain. It said legal action will be held against anyone providing assistance to any country at war. England agreed to give up its forts in the northwestern frontier, and a joint commission was set up to settle border disputes. England gave up forts on American soil, but required Americans to repay their debts.

What dispute did Pinckney’s Treaty settle? It established friendship between the United States and Spain. It also defined the boundaries of the United States with the Spanish colonies and guaranteed the United States navigation on the Mississippi River.

Who was George Washington's Vice President, and how was he chosen? John Adams was the first VP, second was Thomas Jefferson The loser of the presidential election would be the Vice President. John Adams
