Interpreting graphs… Solubility

›A physical property ›A measure of how well a solute can dissolve in a solvent. Solubility is…

Solute is…  The part of the solution that is dissolved by the solvent. Solvent is…  The part of the solution that dissolves the other substance.

Solubility Curves Under the line = UNSATURATED A

Solubility Curves UNSATURATED = means that more solute can be added to the solution.

In an unsaturated solution… All the solute will be completely dissolved. This would be like Mystery Substance B (the sugar) from the activity.

Solubility Curves At the line = SATURATED B

Solubility Curves SATURATED means that the maximum amount of solute has been added to the solution.

In a saturated solution… All of the solute will be dissolved. If any more solute is added to the solution, it would settle to the bottom of the beaker.

Solubility Curves Above the line = SUPER=SATURATED C

Solubility Curves SUPER=SATURATED means that there is more solute than the solution can hold.

In a super-saturated solution… All of the solute cannot be dissolved. The additional solute added above it saturation level, will settle to the bottom. It cannot be dissolved! Example – Mystery Substance A and C (Baking Soda and Salt) from activity.
