Pass out the “International Organizations” activity & reading from iCivics.

Read paragraph one together. Define the term “international organization” on your activity sheet. Share out your definitions. Work in pairs to read the remaining paragraphs and find the definitions for intergovernmental organizations and nongovernmental organizations.

Some nongovernmental organizations are concerned with international issues, known as international nongovernmental organizations (INGOs). They provide a variety of services and humanitarian functions, communicate citizen concerns to governments, advocate for certain issues such as human rights or the environment, and encourage political participation.

ADD THIS TO YOUR ACTIVTY SHEET: Non-example of NGO: not a treaty, which is a formal agreement among the governments of several nations North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) – a formal agreement among the governments of the U.S., Canada, and Mexico to form a large free trade zone in North America and eliminate taxes on the buying and selling of each other’s products

Now, let’s look at the World Trade Organization together to know what I expect from you in your groups. Locate the “World Trade Organization” on your activity sheet. What do we need to know about the WTO? year established, headquarters, INGO or NGO, who is involved, main purpose, how can countries/citizens support and participate Where should we look to gather this information?
