1.Around 800 bc settled in Etruria. 2.borrowed alphabet from Greeks, but spoke a different language from everyone else. 3. dug tunnels and built dams to drain fields; built cities on hilltops w/ a wall.
4. 1 st civilized people in Italy “People of the Sea”. 5. were pirates and traders.

7. Used copper, lead, iron, and tin to make weapons, utensils, & jewelry.
8. soldiers learned from Greeks → had a phalanx

A. Daily Life 1.enjoyed bright colors, riches, & a good time 2. played games (similar to chess & backgammon); gambled with ivory dice

5. women danced, participated in celebrations, and owned property

B. Religious Beliefs 1. gods modeled after Greeks 2. worshipped in temples with sculptures

C. Tombs of Gold 1. Noble dies → banquet → 2 slaves fight to death, loser goes with noble 2. dead buried in catacombs → pics of daily life, chairs, & body put on a bed
3. life after death- longer & more important than on earth -filled with works of art, treasures of gold, silver, bronze, and ivory 4. Etruscan tombs are known as “tombs of gold”
5. Outside each Etruscan city was a necropolis, or cemetery 6.Caere is one of largest Etruscan cemeteries
