THE CITY OF THE DEAD Photographs by RPS RPS.LAM Cairo To start this slideshow click on this picture – once it starts you can advance each slide by clicking on it or wait and it will advance automatically after 5 seconds Linking the Cairo’s past and present are the twin cemeteries on the eastern periphery known as the City of the Dead. Today, because of housing shortages and poverty, about 500,000 Cairenes live in these tombs and mausoleums of the deceased. Lynda and I visited the City of the Dead twice, in 1988 & 1989 to take photographs. Our Taxi drivers were reluctant to take us, telling us that it was dangerous and a place that people don’t go. We insisted that we wished to visit the cemeteries and were rewarded with these photographs. We spent a long time there and, once they got used to us, the residents extended their hospitality to us. They asked me to photograph them, the result being a set of pictures that we treasure. To exit this slideshow use the Back Arrow on your Browser to return to our Egypt Webpage
