Today, because of housing shortages and poverty, about 500,000 Cairenes live in these tombs and mausoleums of the deceased. Lynda and I visited the City of the Dead twice, in 1988 & 1989 to take photographs. Our Taxi drivers were reluctant to take us, telling us that it was dangerous and a place that people don’t go. We insisted that we wished to visit the cemeteries and were rewarded with these photographs. We spent a long time there and, once they got used to us, the residents extended their hospitality to us.
