God’s Scales Weigh A King “Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting…For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” Daniel 5:27, Romans 3:23

The Facts, Please. A scale is a device for determining the weight of any substance. All types of weighing scales are based on the principle of balance.

More Facts, Please. The balance scale probably originated in ancient Egypt about five thousand years before Christ. The very first balance scales may have suspended a beam of wood by hanging it from a cord. Later, the crossbeam was supported in the middle by a vertical bar. Two pans of equal weight were hung on either end of the crossbeam.

More Facts, Please. A known weight was placed in one pan, and the object to be weighed was put in the other. By adding or subtracting known weight until both sides were balanced, the weight of the object could be learned. If a balance scale crossbeam tilts down on the side of the known weight, the object being weighed is too light. If it tilts the other way, the ofject is too heavy.

More Facts, Please. Balance scales are mentioned in several places in the Bible, going back to Job’s and Moses’ times. They are still in use today, with very little change.
