Gorillas By: Marshall Lockyer

My Main question Q: What is the role of a silverback gorilla in a pack? A: Silverbacks are the leaders of a pack of gorillas. They lead hunts and searches for food. Also they warn the group in times of danger.

First sub question Q: Are all silverback gorillas male? A: YES! All silverback gorillas are male.

Second sub question Q: On average how much do most silverbacks weigh in pounds? A: If they are healthy they weigh about 300 lbs. to about 450 lbs. An obese gorilla can weigh over 500 lbs.

Third sub question Q: On average how old are most silverback gorillas? A: This really depends on the pack, however on average they are years old when they are at the peak of their strength.

Fourth sub question Q: What is their role in group hunts or searches for food? A: They lead these things, and get first dibs on the food.

Silverback facts They are the “king” or alpha male of the group They are all males There is a patch of silver on their back that is why they are called silverbacks They can weigh 450 lbs. and still be healthy Most silverbacks are years old They get first dibs on food they find They can be 6 feet, when standing on hind legs

Blackback facts Blackbacks are all males They are behind the silverback or second in command A healthy blackback can weigh 300 pounds Most blackbacks are 5-14 years old They can be up to 5 ½ feet tall

Female gorilla facts They teach and protect the young They get second dibs on food the group finds They groom all members of the group (this is significant because they are the only members that groom everyone) Can be just as big as fully grown males when they are fully grown

Baby gorilla facts They learn from the mothers and get piggy backs from them They get groomed by their parents They hate to sleep They love to play Get last dibs on food

Fun facts Only 700 lowland gorillas remain The ones that do remain all live in central Africa Gorillas are the largest and strongest primates On average a pack of gorillas consists of gorillas. Gorillas are herbivores A life span of a gorilla is years in the wild

More fun facts Gorillas are sadly endangered They are very intelligent, and are famous for their use of tools They can live 55 years in captivity They could easily kill a leopard Adult gorillas eat 30 kilograms of food a day Gorillas in captivity can learn sign language
