1 Motivation A passion for what you are doing that goes beyond money It is marked by a tendency to pursue goals with energy and persistence

2 People work harder when someone took an interest in what they were doing (Hawthorne) Intentions (expressed as goals) are motivating (Goal-Setting Theory) People weigh what they put in with what they get out (Equity Theory) Motivation Theory

3 What Actually Motivates People? Positive reinforcement Having clear goals/targets Meeting expectations Social learning – working with others you respect or like Participation – being involved and recognised Being able to do things that are interesting, necessary and valued

4 How do you Sustain Motivation? Leadership and Management Have a clear vision and sense of mission – start with the end in mind Develop a strategy, a game plan Involve people and make them feel good about acting as a team Give people things to do that they are willing and able to do and then stretch them Support people and recognise their contribution.
