Momentum. Introduction to Momentum Momentum can be defined as "mass in motion." All objects have mass; so if an object is moving, then it has momentum.

Homework Due TURN IN PROJECT!! Tonight’s HW Read and Study ; do #1-6 (POGIL finished if needed) Do Now Brainstorm at least THREE things that happened over winter break that you could relate to something you learned in Physics this school year. Write/draw the scenarios.

For this chapter…. Your book uses the key terms IMPULSE and IMPACT. THEY ARE NOT THE SAME! IMPACT is a synonym for FORCE. I would rather you use FORCE, not IMPACT, so that you don’t confuse yourself…(just like we use “negative acceleration” rather than “deceleration.” Make note of this on your HW now!

Have you ever heard an older relative say that “They don’t make cars like they used to..old cars are made better…etc.?” In other words – “newer” cars crumple more easily when in an accident. What do YOU think? What’s safer – a car whose hood is designed to “crumple” in an accident, or one whose hood is not designed to crumple? 1.Car whose hood crumples 2.Car whose hood is designed not to crumple 3.Equally as safe/dangerous 4.Not quite sure

Let’s watch and see… Q0w Q0w Chevy Malibu vs. Bel Air Video

Crash Test With the people around you, discuss what you saw, particularly any differences/ similarities in the ways the 2 cars experienced the crash

NOW--- What do YOU think? What’s safer – a car whose hood is designed to “crumple” in an accident, or one whose hood is not designed to crumple? 1.Car whose hood crumples 2.Car whose hood is designed not to crumple 3.Equally as safe/dangerous 4.Not quite sure

Why is that? Brainstorm with the people around you why you think a crumple zone makes a car safer

Why is that? mOg mOg Volvo XC60: Crumple Zones

Other safety features in an accident… What are they, and what do they do?

It is often said that the force of impact is what kills someone in a car accident. Do you think this is ALWAYS true? 1.Yes –this is always true 2.Maybe it is sometimes true – but there are other factors 3.Not quite sure

Would you rather experience a car accident in a Smart Car or big SUV? (Going from 70 mph to 0 mph in a second) 1.Smart Car 2.SUV 3.It doesn’t matter – you’d be dead either way

Let’s watch and see… yyoU8s yyoU8s Smart Car crash demo

Would you rather experience a car accident in a Smart Car or big SUV? (Going from 70 mph to 0 mph in a second) 1.Smart Car 2.SUV 3.It doesn’t matter – you’d be dead either way

Today’s Goals Finish the POGIL you received Check in at stop signs We are stopping with 15 minutes left for an exit

What is some kind of memory aid you have to help you remember “momentum?” Brainstorm, then share!!
