THANKSGIVING DAY Thanksgiving began as a feast of thanksgiving in the early days of the American colonies almost four hundred years ago. In 1620, a boat filled with more than 100 people sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to settle in the New Word. Living was difficult for the Pilgrims, and almost half the pilgrims died due to disease. The next summer, the Iroquois Indians taught the pilgrims how to grow crops such as corn, beans, and pumpkins. To show the Indians how thankful they were, the colonist prepared a huge feast for everyone, which is something we still do today. Symbols of Thanksgiving: Turkey, Corn, Cranberry Sauce, Pumpkins, Holiday Decorations and Greeting Cards.
