Proposal to Expand the International Teaching Intern Program to CMS and EPHS and Proposed SEF Budget April 28, 2014

Immersion Students in EP Next Year K-6 th at EHSI 7-8 th at CMS, Spanish immersion curriculum in: Social Studies Spanish Language and Culture 9 th at EPHS, Spanish immersion curriculum in: Spanish Language and Culture Prepares immersion students for college-level Spanish in 10 th or 11 th grade

SEF Mission “Support the Eden Prairie Spanish Immersion Program, through sustainable funding, to host the best volunteer international Spanish speaking interns and provide other educational and cultural resources.”

How the SEF Raises Funds We raise the funds in the year prior to when they will be used. Annual Donation Campaign – 30% of families have participated so far this year Employer matching donations Cinco de Mayo Fundraiser Fiesta Teacher Time Raffle Online Auction Cinco event

Past Fundraising for the Intern Program EHSI families raised enough funds in to have 12 interns in school year. Due to various issues, EHSI had only 3 interns in the fall and 5 in the spring during Since the funds were not entirely used in , they were carried forward to future years. Some of the carry-forward has been used to fund interns from 2010 to now.

Proposal for Next Year 14 interns at EHSI, assisting with K-6 (same number of interns since ) 1 intern at CMS, assisting in immersion classes (approximately 12 classes) 1 intern at EPHS, assisting in immersion classes (2 classes in the fall, 1 in the spring) and other Spanish classes

How Would We Pay for This? EHSI interns: Paid for through this year’s fundraising efforts and approximately $7,750 of the carry-forward, depending on the results of Cinco

How Would We Pay for This? EHSI interns: Paid for through this year’s fundraising efforts and approximately $7,750 of the carry-forward, depending on the results of Cinco CMS and EPHS interns: We propose to use $12,120 of the carry-forward funds that our current 5 th -8 th grade families raised back in , to guarantee funding for 1 CMS intern and 1 EPHS intern next year. This amount would establish intern programs at CMS and EPHS. CMS and EPHS families would be responsible to raise funds for the following years.

Why Use the Carry-Forward At All? Families raised this money in to benefit their children. Since the SEF did not use all of those funds in , the SEF has used a portion of these funds each year to make up for gaps in fundraising from 2010-present. Current carry-forward balance is $39,114. If we use $19,870 of the carry-forward toward all interns (EHSI, CMS and EPHS) next year, we will still have an estimated $19,244 in carry-forward remaining.

Could We Raise Enough in Future Years to Fund 14 Interns? In , with only grades K-3, EHSI families raised $87,807. Next year’s proposed budget for only EHSI interns and General SEF Expenses is $89,275. With 7 grades now at EHSI, raising this amount is possible if more than 30% of families donate to the Annual Donation Campaign. Active participation by families will be necessary in order to raise the funds needed every year.

Next Year’s Fundraising Donations Include all K-8 immersion families in the Annual Donation Campaign to fund EHSI and CMS interns. Collect donations from all EPHS families whose students are enrolled in Spanish classes (immersion and non-immersion). Families will be able to identify which program(s) they want to donate to. Open the Cinco Online Auction to all families Potentially open Cinco de Mayo Fundraiser Fiesta event to all families

Accounting of Funds SEF Treasurer will continue to control the funds. All SEF funds will be maintained in the same bank account, but expenses and income will be tracked separately for each school’s intern program.

Intern Support Two added positions to the SEF: CMS Intern Program Liaison EPHS Intern Program Liaison We will continue to need the following for all interns: Host families Buddy families Drivers Winter clothing As always, we will need enough hosts and buddies in order to invite the number of interns that we can fund. Adding CMS and EPHS can provide a wider pool of families and resources for intern support.
