T HE REASON FOR CHOOSING OBESITY As defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Indicators Warehouse (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2010) : Overweight is any adult with a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 25 and 29.9 (CDC, 2010). Obese adults have a BMI of over 30 (National Health Indicators Warehouse, 2010). In Oregon it is estimated that 23% of adults were obese in 2009 (CDC, 2010). In Klamath County it is estimated that 24.7% of adults were obese in 2008 (CDC, 2010) Age-Adjusted Estimates of the Percentage of Adults Who Are Obese in Oregon by County (CDC, 2010).

W HAT CONTRIBUTES TO OBESITY ? According to Edelman and Mandel the following factors contribute to obesity (2010. p.297): Sedentary Lifestyle Genetics Age Decreased Physical Activity Poor Nutrition

C OMPLICATIONS OF OBESITY Obesity increases an individuals risk of developing other chronic health conditions such as (The Mayo Clinic, 2010): Hypertension Diabetes Mellitus Certain Cancers Depression Gallbladder Disease Heart Disease Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Metabolic Syndrome Stroke Sleep Apnea Physical Discomfort Sexual Dysfunction

E XERCISE B ENEFIT Regular physical exercise is effective in promoting and maintaining health and preventing disease.
