By Boudrieau, E

I knew from the start that the 8 th grade project would not be a breeze to go through. Everybody in my class is choosing to do something ordinary. I knew nobody would have the same mind set as me, so I chose a difficult experiment, Anesthesia.

 Anesthesia has 3 main types: general, local and regional.  General is when you put the whole body to sleep. (preferably before surgery)  Local is in a small part of your body like your gums.  Regional is anesthesia that can numb a limb of your body or an area on your body.

 The hardest part of my experiment with anesthesia this month is finding a mentor. I had a few choices…

 This man was my first choice to be my mentor.  His busy schedule could not fit in with the requirements of my project so he could not participate.

 After I heard that Doctor Replogle could not be my mentor I was nearly out of time to have my mentor agreement signed.  I arrived at one of my mothers old neurologist’s hospital and a man told me too call admin to find a mentor.  Dr. Barry picked up and said he would be willing to be my mentor.

 In 1298 the first use of opium and mandragoro used to help pain of surgery.  A Boston dentist uses anesthesia to help the pain of an ulcerated tooth in  In 1846 ether anesthesia is administered in Paris, France.  In 1860, Albert Niemann purifies cocaine. (a form of anesthesia that is highly addictive)  Cocaine was later not used for anesthesia.

I know that anesthesia is a very complicated process. I will continue to learn the wonders of anesthesia and interview my mentor once a month. I will ask him what it is like to be an anesthesiologist and what it is like to handle anesthesia. Dr. Barry will be interviewed through the phone for 10 minutes. I would like to know what is inside anesthesia. I’m hopefully going to be able to do one experiment (in a hospital) that includes putting a small bug to sleep. I will need to study how much anesthesia is needed to put a human under anesthesia and create ratios to a bug. I will record the footage on tape and show it through a computer because it is unsafe to have at a school. In the future, I will study even more websites than before and find a book on anesthesia. Anesthesia is not a very popular type of book though.
