U.S. Coast Guard Living Marine Resources Division: Marine Protected Species Program

U.S. Coast Guard- The Nation’s Ocean Steward

Endangered Species Act U.S. Coast Guard identified to enforce the provisions of the Act.

Living Marine Resources The Coast Guard enforces fishing regulations. Some of these regulations require fishing gear that is less harmful to protected species, like nets that allow turtles to escape (Turtle Excluder Devices) Fishery Enforcement - Domestic Fishing Vessels - Other Law Enforcement/Foreign Fishing Vessels The Coast Guard is also the nation’s first responder to when animals are entangled at-sea, enforcing regulations for marine sanctuaries. Marine Protected Species Entanglements Strandings National Marine Sanctuaries

Whales sometimes get entangled in fishing line and other ocean debris.

Coast Guard-the first responders Humpback Whale: Cutting away the debris wrapped around the whale. Pilot Whale: Responding to an entangled whale at sea.

Sea turtles get entangled too, the Coast Guard takes action! Leatherback Sea TurtleLoggerhead Sea Turtle

The Coast Guard returns turtles to the ocean once they are recuperated.

Sometimes, Coast Guard aircraft is used to transport animals long distances to ensure their recovery.

The Coast Guard also takes care of the ocean by removing debris that can trap animals and hurt coral reefs.

The Coast Guard is the Nation’s ocean steward. U.S. Coast Guard- Semper Paratus
