IMPECS Workshop on Social Computing Niloy Ganguly & Krishna Gummadi

IMPECS: Indo-Max Planck Center for Computer Science Vision:  perform top-quality basic research in Computer Science (CS) in cooperation between Indian and German computer scientists,  serve as a bridge between the Indian and German CS communities, and enhance scientific cooperation between them, and  act as a center of excellence in which faculty and students can build careers. Funded by DST, BMBF, & Max Planck Society

Max Planck Society Germany's premier & most successful basic research organization.  17 Nobel laureates since 1948 Runs more than 80 Max Planck Institutes (MPIs) conducting research in medicine, biology, chemistry, physics, technology & humanities  Institutes are fairly autonomous

MPIs in CS MPI for Informatics (since 1990)  Algorithms, Databases, Graphics, Vision, & Computational biology MPI for Software Systems (since 2005)  Operating / distributed / real-time systems, Networking, Programming languages, Verification, Security, Social web systems

IMPECS group on Online Social Networks Understanding, Leveraging and Deploying Online Social Networks Collaborators: Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (Niloy) MPI for Software Systems, MPI-SWS (Krishna) Project for 5 years

The Idea IMPECS supports workshops on topics of interest to research groups Choice To make an one-off big workshop with lots of international speakers Do a smaller workshop and try to understand whether a sustainable platform for interaction is possible.

People from a lot of fields have began to take interest in social computing  Machine learning/IR  Networks/Systems  Statistical Physics  Sociology/Economics A huge number customer base existing in India  50 million Indian Facebook Users The Idea

Ideal time to bring in researchers together and exchange ideas

Schedule Individual Talks Birds of Feather Session  Dividing social computing into more specific topics and looking whether collaboration can be initiated Panel Discussion  Publication – roadblocks and solutions Open House  Towards Community Formation
