Ethical Deer Hunting in Texas Mr. Gonzales

Introduction How many of you have heard this song before? How does this song relate to today’s lesson?

Today we will.. Identify and describe the characteristics of an ethical hunter Define the terms: legal shooting hours, annual bag limit, poaching, game warden Differentiate between a legal and illegal buck deer Evaluate the importance of following regulations and being an ethical hunter

An ethical hunter is... Courteous, careful, capable, and considerate Mindful of the non-hunting public One who tags and transports game properly

Me, You, Us Moment Take the next three minutes and write on a piece of paper 3-4 sentences about what hunting might be like today. Be prepared to share your answers.

Factors affecting deer hunting Legal Shooting Hours Annual Bag Limit Poaching Game Warden

Legal Shooting Hours Legal shooting hours are the period of time during the day that a hunter is allowed to take a deer. This time period is ½ hour before sunrise to ½ hour after sunset.

Annual Bag Limit Annual Bag Limit is the maximum number of deer that may be lawfully taken by a hunter during a license year. This is 5 white-tailed deer in Texas, with no more than 3 being bucks (all seasons combined).

Poaching Poaching is the illegal hunting, fishing, or harvesting of plants and animals. Not only is poaching illegal, it is unethical!

Game Warden Game wardens are the state or local officials responsible for enforcing laws pertaining to the hunting, fishing, or trapping of wild animals. A game warden enforces the laws and regulations to decrease poaching and to ensure the conservation of our wildlife.

A legal buck deer has...  A hardened antler protruding through the skin AND  At least one unbranched antler; OR  An inside spread measurement between main beams of 13 inches or greater.

Determining the inside spread  To determine if a buck has an inside spread measurement of at least 13 inches, look at the distance from ear-tip to ear-tip on a buck when the ears are in the alert position.

Observing the inside spread

Which of these deer are legal?

Show What You Know! The class will now take a quiz over the information I have presented! Switch with your elbow partner and we will grade them in class. What questions do you have about what we have done today?

What have I learned?  What are the four characteristics of an ethical hunter? Describe legal shooting hours, poaching, game warden, and annual bag limit  What is the inside spread measurement for a buck that is legal to take?

Summary  An ethical hunter is: courteous, careful, capable, and considerate (4 C’s of being an ethical hunter)  Legal shooting hours, annual bag limit, poaching, and game wardens are factors that affect our hunting regulations.  A legal buck deer is defined as having an inside spread measurement between main beams of 13 inches or greater.

Reflection Write YOUR reflection of what we learned today How may this information help you in your everyday life as a sportsman and conservationist? Why is it important to follow regulations and hunt ethically?

Next time... We will be discussing restricted and legal methods of hunting deer. Have a great day!
