Today 4 th year……. Why is some aid better than others? Examples of good aid. Examples of bad aid.

Good Aid? When a developing country receives aid, it can transform the living standards of the people if it is “good aid”. Good aid helps the country to become self-sufficient and is targeted to meet the problems of the country.

Good Aid? Aid given by richer countries is said to be helpful when it satisfies some of the following points: The people receiving the aid are consulted. The aid helps people to become self-sufficient, and so frees them from the need to ask for aid in the future. The aid is targeted to meet specific need, and is designed to help people. The aid is monitored and assessed to examine how effective it is.

Bad aid? If it is “bad aid”, the aid may not help the problems of the country. It can be given for selfish reasons, so that the donor country benefits more than the recipient. The aid can become a “crutch” which the developing country relies upon, and does not encourage the people to help themselves.

Bad Aid Aid given by richer countries is unhelpful to developing countries when it does some of the following: The aid reaches the government, but not the people who need it. The aid is given for selfish reasons to please the donor country. The aid encourages those receiving it to rely on it and does not encourage people to help themselves. The aid is not designed to encourage development in the country receiving it.

Do this…….. Read page 32 of your book Alliances and International Relations. Answer these questions What is ‘Good’ (appropriate) aid’? What is ‘Bad’ (inappropriate) Aid’?
